In July 1954 my nana Zona attended a ball at the Helensburgh Workman’s Club. She was excited to go and had bought a dress, cape and silver shoes from a store called Coral Lee in Sydney. She remembers at the ball that the floor was completely packed and that there were judges who watched the couples dance. The judges asked for her and her partner to come on to the stage where they crowned her Belle of the Ball and awarded her a crown and brooch. She remembers dancing the rest of the night wearing the crown and she described it as the loveliest thing to have ever happen. In the following September she met my grandfather Marko and she wore the same gown for her wedding dress.
