In the good old days (!), with the Captain’s approval, you could go into the cockpit of the aeroplane. I was about 4 when this photo was taken, it was one of the first times I was in there, and we were on our way to Hong Kong as my dad had just been given a job there. My brothers and I were always so excited to be in the cockpit and every time we had the stern talk from Dad not to touch anything. We were mainly there for the take-off or landing so we didn’t spend much time in there and as exciting as it was, not being able to talk much or touch anything meant it did get a little boring after a while! As a child I loved having a Dad who was a pilot, although I remember feeling a little sad each time he packed to go on a trip but he was never away for long. When I was at primary school, lots of my friends’ dads were also pilots so it was quite the norm. It was only really when I grew up and went to secondary school that I realised how less common it was. I’ve done a lot of travelling over the years and every time my Dad is at the ‘wheel’ I feel very proud, those are the best flights.
